Hip revision and knee revision surgery
Hip and knee care in St. Petersburg, Florida, for people throughout the Tampa Bay area.
When a previous joint replacement needs evaluation
Pain or difficulty using a replaced hip or knee deserves an assessment. Symptoms do not automatically mean another operation is needed. Dr. Hirshorn’s fellowship training includes revision surgery and complex hip and knee reconstruction.
Hip revision
Hip revision may replace some or all of an existing implant. Reasons can include wear, loosening, recurrent dislocation, infection or a fracture. Evaluation helps identify the cause and determine treatment options.
Knee revision
Knee revision may address a worn, loose, unstable or infected implant. Some cases require replacement of selected components; others need more extensive reconstruction. It is different from a first knee replacement and requires individual planning.
Will revision surgery be outpatient?
Revision surgery can be more complex than a first joint replacement. The operation, medical needs and anticipated recovery determine the setting and length of stay. Do not assume the outpatient pathway for a first replacement applies to a revision.
Preparing for a revision consultation
Bring prior operative reports, implant information, recent imaging and a medication list if available. Explain when symptoms began and whether you have had previous treatment for infection. Your surgeon may recommend additional testing.
